Growing up in a sharecropper's family in Georgia, moving to Easton, Pennsylvania on welfare, dropping out of school at 13 — Holmes found boxing as his way out of poverty.

He trained in Muhammad Ali's camp and sparred alongside the Greatest — overlooked and underestimated, until Don King needed a new champion when Ali's prime was fading.

Holmes walked away from a $30 million payday — refusing to fight in apartheid-era South Africa while Nelson Mandela was still imprisoned. Mandela later kept a photo of "his champion" on his prison cell wall.
